What is Adoration? - Derri Turnbo & Kim Turnbo

Derri Turnbo, worship leader, and Kim Turnbo, prayer leader and intercessor leader, describe how the Adoration flows for our courses, combining song and prayer and meditation on scripture.

“When you and God connect, you automatically give birth to things of the spirit!” - Wendy Backlund

Adoration Leads to Encounter

We believe that worship is the quickest way to get into God’s presence and to know Him as a friend. Since our desire is to bring God friends, we have made worship the first building block of each class. We name this 20-minute segment Adoration because we focus on a style of worship that is very personal and that cultivates a deep love and respect for God. The songs chosen are usually sung directly to God, rather than about Him. We hope that each week’s Adoration will bring you into a personal encounter with God.

How the Adoration Time is Structured

  • The worship team starts with a worship song during which we are intentional about turning our eyes to Jesus and setting our affection on Him.
  • The prayer leader reads the meditation verse and prays from it.
  • Students can use the selected Bible verses to engage with the Lord.
  • Singers spontaneously sing inspired by the meditation verse and prayers.

What Do I Do During the Adoration Time?

The students are responsible for connecting with God during the Adoration. There’s an old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink it.” Our Adoration is structured in a way to lead you to the living water (John 4:10, John 7:37-39), but you are the one who will need to connect with God. As you practice, it will get easier!

Some students journal or draw during the Adoration. Some enjoy dancing or lying on the floor. We encourage you to use your physical body to engage with God. You are body, soul and spirit. Sometimes it is helpful to move your body in a prophetic act that helps your spirit to connect with God. Perhaps you may take a physical step forward or go to a different place in the room.

If you desire to have a more structured approach during Adoration, this is one way to do it:

  • Close your eyes in order to focus more on God without distraction
  • Imagine yourself having an experience like Revelation 3:20 NKJV: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in…”
  • Give Him permission to encounter you by opening the door of your heart to Him
  • Speak or sing directly to Jesus as a friend
